Allen County, Kentucky

“A day well spent exploring the stories, landmarks, and hidden gems of Allen County.”

I recently got to spend some time exploring Allen County, Kentucky, and it turned out to be a full day of history, food, and local legends.

I started the day at South 4 Farms, where I picked up some maple syrup and learned about the tree-tapping process. It was a cool behind-the-scenes look at how syrup is made and a perfect way to kick things off.

From there, I headed to the site where the American Airlines Flight 63 plane crash occurred.

While I was in the area, I decided to take my chances and look for the Haint Beech Tree, a spot steeped in local folklore and mystery.

For lunch, I stopped by Habegger’s Amish Market, where I grabbed a sandwich and picked up some fresh Amish bread—simple, hearty, and exactly what I needed.

Next, I visited the first Dollar General store, located right on the square, before taking a short detour to the Haunted War Memorial Hospital. I also stopped by the popular and historic Public Spring, a longtime gathering place in the community.

My final stop of the day was the Allen County Rosenwald School, a preserved historic Black school that stands as an important reminder of the county’s educational and cultural history.

All in all, it was a day well spent exploring the stories, landmarks, and hidden gems of Allen County.
