Fresh Bread, Cinnamon Buns, and Mennonite Roots in Scottsville

“Habegger’s is a hub where locals and visitors can experience the flavors, skills, and traditions that the Mennonites carried with them from Pennsylvania.”

I stopped by Habegger’s Amish Market in Scottsville, Kentucky, for lunch. I ordered a simple sandwich, shaved turkey breast on sourdough, with onion, lettuce, and tomato, and it was excellent. Nothing flashy, just good bread and good meat.

Habegger’s sits at 415 Perrytown Road, in the heart of Amish Country in Allen County. The market is part of a community that traces its roots back to 1978, when a group of Mennonite families migrated from Pennsylvania seeking more farmland and a slower pace of life. They brought with them traditions that had been honed over generations: careful craftsmanship, simple but hearty food, and a way of life centered on faith and community. Today, those values are visible in everything at Habegger’s, from the shelves of local goods to the homemade treats in the bakery.

When the first families arrived, they built modest homes, planted crops, and began raising animals, carving out a small corner of Amish culture in southern Kentucky. Over the years, the community grew, but it retained the same quiet rhythm and attention to detail that made the migration worthwhile. Habegger’s is a hub where locals and visitors can experience the flavors, skills, and traditions that the Mennonites carried with them from Pennsylvania.

Walking into the market now, you can sense that continuity. The shelves are stocked with Amish-made meats, cheeses, homemade butter, and Dutch-made bulk foods, alongside locally sourced jams, jellies, BBQ sauces, snacks, and seasonal produce. The aroma of fresh breads, pies, and cookies drifts from the bakery, mingling with the hum of the deli, which quietly turns out sandwiches and baked goods, including their generously iced cinnamon buns.

Friendly service, a warm atmosphere, and excellent deli food make Habegger’s a standout stop in Scottsville.
