A French Toast I Keep Coming Back To

“This version leans warm and citrusy, with orange zest and allspice cutting through the richness.”

French toast is one of those quiet kitchen rituals. Nothing fancy, nothing rushed. Just a bowl, a pan, and a few good ingredients that do the heavy lifting. This version leans warm and citrusy, with orange zest and allspice cutting through the richness. It’s the kind of breakfast that feels a little special without trying to be.

Ingredients

Eggs
Heavy cream
Pinch of salt
A touch of sugar
Vanilla extract
Orange zest
Maple syrup
Allspice
Thick-cut bread
Butter, for the pan

For serving:
Butter
Maple syrup
Powdered sugar

How I Make It

I start by adding the eggs, cream, salt, sugar, vanilla, orange zest, maple syrup, and a pinch of allspice to a bowl or blender. Everything gets blended until smooth—no streaks, no clumps.

Each slice of bread goes into the mixture and rests for about one minute per side. Long enough to soak, not so long that it falls apart.

A skillet goes on medium heat with a generous pat of butter. Once melted, the bread goes in. I cook each side until golden and set, flipping once.

When it’s done, it goes straight onto a plate. I finish it with butter, warm maple syrup, and a light dusting of powdered sugar.

Nothing complicated. Just good food, made slowly, meant to be eaten warm.
