“Built in 1854 as the last sail-only warship designed and constructed by the U.S. Navy”
Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, the USS Constellation Museum offers visitors a chance to step aboard a piece of naval history—and, some say, into the past itself. With a reputation for eerie encounters and a history that dates back to the mid-19th century, this ship is not only a remarkable artifact of the U.S. Navy but also one of the most haunted sites in Maryland.

The USS Constellation is a sloop-of-war, built in 1854 as the last sail-only warship designed and constructed by the U.S. Navy. While she shares a name with the original USS Constellation, a frigate built in 1797, only a small amount of material from the older ship was used in the construction of the new vessel. Despite this, the ship carries the weight of its predecessor’s legacy and has become a time capsule of America’s naval history.

The Constellation played a significant role in the African Slave Trade Patrol, intercepting slave ships and freeing those who had been captured. She later served during the Civil War, helping to enforce Union blockades. Her decks have witnessed not just the routine life of sailors but also the hardships of war, disease, and death—elements that may explain the ship’s lingering energy.

Visitors and employees alike have reported chilling encounters on board. Shadows are seen moving across the decks, disembodied voices echo through the halls, and full-bodied apparitions have been spotted walking past windows long after the last tour of the day. Some have even claimed to see the figure of a uniformed officer standing at the bow, staring out into the harbor.

For those brave enough, the USS Constellation Museum offers lantern-lit ghost tours and even overnight stays—though many who take on the challenge report a restless night, disturbed by unexplained sounds and ghostly whispers.

We had the chance to visit the USS Constellation in 2009, and the experience was unforgettable. The USS Constellation Museum is a must-see for anyone exploring Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.
