Franklin has become one of my favorite places for finding unusual roadside attractions, and these are perfect if you’re looking for a fun afternoon drive without spending any money.

The first stop is Graffiti Road on Kummer Road. Stretching for about a mile, this quiet country road has become an ever-changing outdoor art gallery. Nearly every section of pavement is covered in colorful messages, drawings, names, and creative designs left behind by visitors over the years. No two visits are exactly the same because the artwork is constantly changing as new people add their own creations. It’s a fun place to walk, take photos, and see what others have left behind. Just remember to be respectful of the area and watch for vehicles since it is still an active roadway.

The first is the giant butter knife, a larger-than-life sculpture built by the Franklin-Simpson High School welding class of 2021.

Right next to the butter knife is a NASA space capsule replica. While it’s not an actual spacecraft, it’s an impressive display that adds even more personality to this unique stop. Seeing a giant butter knife and a space capsule together in rural Kentucky isn’t something you expect, which makes the visit even more memorable.

One of the things I enjoy most about exploring Kentucky is discovering places like these. They may not be famous tourist attractions, but they’re fun, unique, and make for great memories.
