Standing 15 feet tall and weighing 6,000 pounds, the bronze Superman statue dominates Superman Square in downtown Metropolis, Illinois, which proudly calls itself the official hometown of the Man of Steel. Unveiled in 1993, the statue has become one of the most recognizable roadside attractions in America. It is hard not to stop for a picture with the larger-than-life superhero.

Just a short walk away is a statue honoring actress Noel Neill, who portrayed Lois Lane in the 1950s television series Adventures of Superman. Across the street, you’ll find the Super Museum, home to more than 70,000 pieces of Superman memorabilia, including costumes, comics, props, and collectibles. Even if you’re only a casual fan, it’s hard not to appreciate the dedication to preserving Superman history.

Metropolis wasn’t always destined to become the Superman capital of the world. In 1972, plans were announced for a massive $50 million theme park called The Amazing World of Superman. The proposed park would have covered 1,000 acres and featured a 200-foot-tall Superman statue with cars driving between his legs to enter the park. Unfortunately, the oil crisis and economic troubles brought the ambitious project to an end before construction ever began.

The town tried again in 1986 with a seven-foot fiberglass Superman statue, but vandals quickly destroyed it. Refusing to give up, local citizens and community organizations raised more than $100,000 to create the current bronze statue. Since its dedication in 1993, the statue has helped revitalize the town and draws tens of thousands of visitors each year.

Every June, Metropolis hosts the four-day Superman Celebration, which brings fans from around the world together to celebrate the iconic hero. Even if you visit outside of festival weekend, you’ll find plenty to see. Fort Massac State Park, the historic Curtis House Museum, and the final resting place of Robert Stroud, better known as the “Birdman of Alcatraz,” are all nearby.

This stop is perfect if you’re a lifelong comic book fan or simply looking for a unique roadside stop, Metropolis is a super place to spend an afternoon.
