Back in 2010, my family and I had the incredible experience of spending Independence Day in Arlington, Virginia just across the Potomac River from the nation’s capital.

What made this celebration truly special was our spot on the lawn of the Army Commander’s residence, offering a front-row seat to the iconic fireworks display over Washington, DC. That year, President Barack Obama was in his first term, and the country was still feeling the energy of his historic election in 2008. The mood around the 4th of July celebrations carried a hopeful and unifying spirit, making the fireworks all the more meaningful. From our vantage point, we could watch the brilliant bursts of color light up the sky above famous landmarks like the Washington Monument and the Capitol Building.

The reflections danced on the Potomac River below us, and the booming sounds of the fireworks echoed across the city. Being so close yet comfortably tucked away in Arlington gave the evening a peaceful, almost intimate feeling, unlike the hustle and bustle of the National Mall itself. It was a unique way to celebrate America’s birthday surrounded by history, patriotism, and the warmth of family.

Looking back, that 4th of July stands out as one of those moments where time slows down, and you simply soak in the magic of the holiday and the country’s rich heritage. If you ever get a chance to watch the DC fireworks from across the river, I highly recommend it, it’s an unforgettable way to see the nation’s capital shine.
