“Many people in town believed that Kate was a witch”

I can’t let Summerween pass without sharing a spooky place! Adams Tennessee is a small town that is known for the events that happened to the John and Lucy Bell family.

The events that unfolded are something like a real estate deal between Kate Batts (Lucy’s Aunt) husband and John Bell caused “bad blood” between them. Kate then cursed John saying she would would make him pay for taking advantage of her husband.

Many people in town believed that Kate was a witch because she was an active member of her household finances and now she’s swore revenge. John Bell and his daughter (Betsy) began having a haunting experience in 1817 until 1820. Experiences included, stones being thrown at the house, animals howling, scratching at the walls, hair being pulled, being slapped.

John claimed that he was having paralysis on his face (with the sides dropping down) and his tongue swelled. He became unable to eat. Even Andrew Jackson stopped by and was able to have experiences of the witch because the stories had so vastly spread.

John Bell died in 1820, supposedly Kate said that she gave him extra medication. The haunting in the house stopped when John Bell died. The wood from the Bell cabin was used to make a new cabin for the younger Bell son and is displayed behind the Court house which is the old Bell High School.

The cabin is said to be haunted by Lucy Bell. The cave on the property of the Bell farm is said to be haunted by John Bell, the witch, and a demonic creature.
