Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial

“Inscribed with the names of 1,108 Kentuckians who lost their lives or went missing in action during the Vietnam War.”

The Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial features an innovative design that integrates both art and engineering. The monument, designed by architect Helm Roberts, is a sundial. Its granite gnomon casts a shadow onto a circular base inscribed with the names of 1,108 Kentuckians who lost their lives or went missing in action during the Vietnam War. The shadow touches each name on the anniversary of that person’s death.

The use of a sundial is particularly symbolic. It represents the passage of time and the enduring memory of those who served. As the shadow moves across the names each day, it serves as a living reminder of the lives lost and the ongoing impact of their sacrifice.

The memorial is also a place of education. Visitors can learn about the Vietnam War and the individual stories of the Kentuckians who served.

The creation of the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial was a community effort, funded by donations from individuals, businesses, and organizations across the state. The dedication ceremony on November 11, 1988, was attended by thousands.

As visitors stand before the sundial, watching the shadow move across the names, they are reminded of the individual lives behind each name and the collective sacrifice they represent. The Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial ensures that these heroes are never forgotten.
