I recently spent a day exploring Adair County, KY, and it was incredible to see how much history, legend, and small-town charm this area holds. One of the first stories that caught my attention was Adair County’s Headless Ghost. The tale has been told for generations, describing a spectral figure said to wander the countryside after a tragic accident long ago. Driving the narrow and winding roads added a chill to this story.
I also learned about Jane Lampton Clemens, the mother of Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, and her life in Adair County. Tracing her roots and seeing the places tied to her family revealed how deeply connected Twain’s early life was to this part of Kentucky. It’s easy to understand why he added Kentucky to so many of his stories.
The drama of history came alive when I explored The Great Raid: Morgan’s Naked Charge into Columbia. The story of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan’s audacious raid is both daring and chaotic, and standing in Columbia while imagining the events made the bravery and tension of that moment tangible. It was striking to think about how history unfolded in such risky and unpredictable ways in these small towns.
The Haunting of Free Union Separate Baptist Cemetery added a different kind of energy to the day. The cemetery felt like a place where the past lingers.
Along the way, a stop in town for a frosty from Wendy’s offered a little pause to enjoy the local flavors and soak in the small-town atmosphere. The day wrapped up with a visit to Lindsey Wilson College, we walked the campus and got to observe the student life. I had many friends from my teen years get track scholarships to this school.
Adair County is full of stories waiting to be discovered, both historical and legendary. The back roads are true Kentucky winding roads with lots of farm land.
