In 1972, grave diggers making routine repairs at Free Union Separate Baptist Church Cemetery stumbled upon a shocking discovery: the unmarked grave of a 54 year old man and a small child wrapped in a pink blanket. Local records indicate the man, whose name has been lost to time, had lost his young child years earlier, yet the burial suggested a tragic family reunion long delayed. Rumors quickly spread through the county about the true nature of the tragedy and the spirits that never found peace.

Almost immediately after the discovery, locals began reporting strange sightings in the cemetery. Drivers on the nearby rural roads told of a man in his 50s, tall and somber, carrying a small infant swaddled in pink. Some saw him standing silently among the graves; others reported seeing him walk slowly along the narrow dirt paths, his eyes fixed on the horizon as if searching for someone.

“I first saw him about dusk,” recalled Angie Jenkins, a lifelong Adair County resident. “He was standing near the flag, holding that little pink bundle. I thought it was a mother and child at first, but then I realized the figure looked like a man, and there was this… sadness about him I can’t explain.”

Sightings weren’t limited to the evenings. Local legend holds that the man and child’s spirits linger because they are waiting for the woman who would complete their family, the man’s wife, long since passed, whose death would allow them to finally be reunited. A curious aspect of the hauntings is that some visitors report seeing the child’s pink blanket alone, lying on the ground, only for it to disappear seconds later. Others claim the man sometimes walks with the child, then suddenly vanishes, leaving no footprints on the soft earth.
