After returning to the U.S., Johnny and June wasted no time in making things official. Rather than waiting for Tennessee’s mandatory waiting period for marriage licenses, they drove to Franklin, Kentucky, where the process was much faster. At the Simpson County Courthouse, they obtained their marriage license, taking advantage of Kentucky’s same day marriage law.

Franklin, a small town just north of the Tennessee border, was known as a popular destination for couples looking for a quick and simple wedding. The courthouse had seen many famous visitors over the years, but Johnny and June’s stop would become one of its most notable moments in history.
